That way you know where you are, even when your phone is dead. It is great on a walk, a long hike or a trip across rough ground.

How do magnetic navigation compasses work?

The needle in the compass turns to the north. The edge shows a scale in degrees. Turn the ring until the needle points north and read off your direction. So you plot a course on the map and then follow it. The needle often sits in a capsule with fluid. Because of this, the needle settles fast and you can read it calmly.

A compass helps even without a map. You see at once which way to go. Moreover, it is small and light, so it fits in your pocket or on a cord round your neck.

What should you look for?

First, think about how you will use it. For a walk, a simple compass is enough. Are you heading deep into nature? Then choose a model with a sight, so you can aim at a point in the distance. Also check the build. A sturdy compass lasts for years. Finally, practise a little at home, then it comes naturally outdoors.

What you find in this collection

Konus Konustar 11 Compass, for the map and the field.

Also the Konus Compass Konuspoint-6, from the same brand.

You find more from this brand in Konus.

In short, magnetic navigation compasses are simple, light and always ready.
